Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Sapzurro

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Sapzurro

Whether you take our Panama-to-Colombia trip or the Colombia-to-Panama trip, you will either start or finish your San Blas Adventure in Colombia. Even though your stay in Colombia isn’t part of our service, we like to ensure our customers have the best time possible — so we hope this blog is helpful. The good news is that Colombia is amazing and you’re in for a real treat! In a series of three blogs, we’d like to tell you more about what you can expect from this specific part of Colombia and we hope this blog helps a few readers make the most of Sapzurro!

AN INTRODUCTION TO SAPZURRO
The name Sapzurro comes from the native Kuna people’s language and it means ‘deep bay’. Sapzurro is a picturesque little town on the north-west of Colombia, right on the boarder with Panama. As it sits on the Caribbean Sea, you’ll enjoy tranquil turquoise waters and its deep bay protects it from the wind and choppy waters typical of this part of the World from December until March. Sapzurro, and the surrounding area, has some of the most beautiful beaches in Colombia. You’ll almost certainly want to walk to Playa Blanca (the White Beach), which is only a short distance away.

Sapzurro is incredibly charming, with small streets and bright, colourful buildings. While it won’t take you very long to explore the town, you should set some time aside to roam the streets and take in all of the different sights and sounds. One of the things you’ll notice as you explore is that Sapzurro has a very small population. Figures from 2013 put the population at 270, but it has obviously increased a little over the years. If you’ve been looking for a little Caribbean town to escape to and relax for a few days, then Sapzurro is perfect for you.

There are no Roads in Sapzurro

There are no roads in Sapzurro! This adds to the off-the-beaten-track charm of the place and it makes getting around much more interesting. If you want to explore the local area, you’ll find La Miel and Capurgana are reasonably short walks away. However, we’ll write blog posts about both of these locations in the near future!

What Can You Do in Sapzurro?

Honestly, Sapzurro isn’t a hotbed of activity with countless things to do. But it’s not supposed to be! It’s a beautiful, relaxing location away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the World!

Apart from relaxing on the beach with a few cocktails either before or after our San Blas island-hopping trip, you can also go diving or snorkelling in the local reefs and explore the local jungle in search of the indigenous wildlife — you might be able to spot a few different species of monkeys and exotic birds.

You can also visit Cascada la Diana: a beautiful little waterfall on the southern part of Sapzurro. You can swim in the small pool at the base of the waterfall or just enjoy the tranquil sounds of the water.

What Can You Eat in Sapzurro?

One of the best things about travelling to a new place is trying the local cuisine. You can expect pretty standard South American fare in Sapzurro, with lots of fresh vegetables and fish (it is a seaside town, afterall). Their most popular dish is fried red snapper served with coconut milk and fried plantain rice. There is also a Peruvian restaurant called Paraiso Cangrejales that serves a lovely range of seafood dishes.

If you’ve had a lot of healthy South American food and you need to shake things up a little, there’s a little pizza place that serves pizza to go and a restaurant owned by a German man that serves a wider range of European cuisine (also including pizza).
