Recently, we’ve written short guides to two of the Colombia locations you’re likely to visit before or after you take one of our trips in the San Blas Islands. We offer two different island-hopping trips through the San Blas Archipelago: one picks guests up in Colombia and sets them down in Panama, and the other picks them up in Panama and drops them off in Colombia. We think this part of Colombia is special and we want our guests to make the most of this part of their journey. Check out our Sapzurro and Capurganá guides if you’d like to learn a little more about each place, but today’s blog is going to focus on La Miel.
An Introduction to La Miel
La Miel is a little village on the north coast of Colombia. It is especially close to Sapzurro (which we covered in a previous blog) and it only takes around 30 minutes to walk between both villages. The walk is along the coast and it’s worth it for the views alone, but it’s also good to sample the three different settlements dotted along this part of Colombia.
Just as with Sapzurro and Capurganá, there are no paved or tarmacked roads in La Miel — only dusty paths. We think this is a huge part of the charm as it allows guests to get away from the busy roads and noisy traffic. You can roam around however you like without worrying about cars coming out of the blue, and you can rent a bicycle or a horse and cart if you want to travel around in style!
You should always have your passport on your person in this part of the World, but it’s especially important in La Miel as it is right on the boarder and they may check it.
Things to do In paradise
La Miel is a small village and there is nowhere near the same range of activities you could expect to find if you were visiting a city. But that’s not why people visit La Miel. They visit because it’s peaceful and full of natural beauty.
La Miel is especially famous for its beautiful bays (such as Playa Blanca), so walking along the coast, exploring, is a must. You’ll notice the relaxing atmosphere from the locals and hopefully a bit of that will rub off on you. Don’t rush from place to place; chill and take in the scenery!
You can also hike into the nearby jungle, keeping an eye out for the exotic wildlife. In the jungles, you’ll find a dazzling array of beautiful birds of paradise and a range of mischievous monkeys.
Just as with Sapzurro and Capurganá, the reefs at La Miel are especially good for snorkelling. This is perhaps the best way to explore the water, as diving equipment is heavy and there are no roads and other such luxuries to help you move this equipment around.
If you like to sit back with a few beverages when you’re travelling, La Miel has a duty-free shop with everything you could possibly want. If you’re staying in Sapzurro and only visiting this beautiful little town(probably the case) then you maybe want to stock up on a few bottles from the duty-free shop before heading back to Sapzurro!
We highly recommend taking a little time to visit La Miel either before or after your trip with us. This is a particularly special part of the World and we want all of our guests to make the most of it!
